The Cardiac Surgeon’s Magic Weapon Once Again Comes Handy

Article Type : Case Report
Author : Sanath Kumar1*, Raghuram Arani 2, Kumar Subbaiyan3*, Prashant Kothari 4

Abstract

Malignant cardiac neoplasms are extremely rare. They remain undiagnosed or detected when the mass embolises to vital organs causing fatal consequences. We report a rare case of malignant cardiac neoplasm managed with a rare surgery thereby highlighting the importance of early intervention in these patients. The postoperative course was stormy with gradual recovery. she was discharged with stable hemodynamics and on regular follow up. The management of a primary cardiac malignancy varies for each case. Prompt decision making and early surgical intervention decides the prognosis.

Abstract

The proximal ascending aorta and the aortic valve are replaced during Modified Bentall’s technique using a composite aortic graft (i.e., a vascular tube graft with an attached mechanical or biologic valve). In addition, the proximal end of the coronary arteries is implanted into holes formed in the aortic graft to maintain circulation to the coronary arteries. We hereby report a case of a patient who was diagnosed having annul aortic ectasia with severe aortic regurgitation with severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Then, he was operated on successfully by modifying Bentall’s procedure. In Bangladesh, our surgeons are performing this technique regularly in recent times. Nevertheless, this complicated case will be encouraging for not only our surgeon but also all surgeons in the world who believe that Modified Bentall’s procedure is a helpful and reliable technique for different types of aortic root disease, particularly for complicated patients.
